Washington, Feb. 27 -- Congress has enough time to avert a government shutdown this week, US Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said during remarks on the Senate floor.

"We have the means and just enough time this week to avoid a shutdown and to make serious headway on annual appropriations," McConnell said on Monday.

If lawmakers do not reach a spending agreement by midnight Friday, there will be a partial government shutdown, and a full government shutdown will take place if no deal is reached by March 8.
