Lucknow, Dec. 20 -- Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Saturday criticised Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over the hijab-related incident involving a Muslim woman doctor, calling it a matter of women's dignity and safety.

Terming the incident "sad and unfortunate," Mayawati said the issue is directly related to women's safety and dignity and should have been resolved long ago through the Chief Minister's direct intervention.

She further remarked that statements made by ministers have only deepened the controversy. In such a situation, she said, the Chief Minister should express remorse and put an end to the matter.
