Kochi, Sept. 26 -- A two-day national workshop on marine macroalgal research for functional food and nutraceutical development has opened at the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI).

The programme, which began yesterday, aims to build capacity among young researchers and to harness the vast untapped resources of marine organisms for human well-being.

Dr. Kajal Chakraborty, Director of the National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR), described marine macro algae as a "game-changer" in developing functional foods. "Exploring seaweed-derived bioactive compounds will significantly contribute to the management of lifestyle diseases," he observed.
