Gadchiroli, Oct. 26 -- The Central Committee of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) has expelled senior politburo member Mallojula Venugopal Rao alias Bhupathi, accusing him of betrayal and counter-revolutionary conduct.

In a statement dated October 16, the outfit denounced Bhupathi and several associates for party-breaking activities following the surrender of 61 cadres in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district earlier this month. The cadres, who laid down weapons before Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on October 15, were described by the Maoist leadership as "misguided" but not enemies.
