Chandigarh, Aug. 15 -- The 79th Independence Day was celebrated with enthusiasm at the Multipurpose Sports Stadium of Government Nehru Memorial College in Mansa, with Punjab's Transport and Jail Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar as the chief guest.

After inspecting the parade and receiving a salute, Minister Bhullar addressed the gathering, extending warm congratulations to the residents. He outlined the Punjab government's initiatives under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to honor freedom fighters and soldiers, including raising the monthly pension for freedom fighters and their heirs from Rs. 9,400 to Rs. 11,000 and increasing ex-gratia payments for families of martyred soldiers from Rs. 50 lakh to Rs. 1 crore.
