Imphal, Jan. 30 -- Manipur joined the nation Thursday in observing Martyrs' Day, also known as Shaheed Diwas, honoring those who sacrificed their lives for India's independence, according to a Lok Bhavan statement.

The solemn occasion also marked the 78th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation.

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla led the commemorative ceremony by laying a wreath at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Memorial Hall in Imphal.

Members of the Legislative Assembly, Chief Secretary, Security Advisor, Director General of Police, and senior civil and police officers also paid their respects by laying wreaths at the statue, honoring Gandhi's legacy of truth and non-violence.
