Lucknow, Dec. 27 -- A 28-year-old man lodged in Lucknow jail on charges of theft died after being taken to Balrampur Hospital, triggering serious allegations of custodial assault by the police.
The deceased's family has accused the police of brutally beating him, leading to his death, officials confirmed today.
The deceased has been identified as Mithun Kumar, son of Chandrika Prasad, a resident of Sitapur district. Mithun was arrested in connection with an alleged theft case registered at Ashiyana police station.
According to the family, police informed them by phone to reach the hospital urgently. When they arrived, they found Mithun dead.
