Kolkata, Aug. 14 -- West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today announced that the state will hold a "special celebration" if the number of beneficiaries under the Kanyashree scheme - a flagship initiative to promote girls' education and prevent child marriage - reaches one crore.
Currently, the Kanyashree scheme has about 93 lakh beneficiaries, and the figure is expected to cross the one-crore mark in the coming months-well before next year's Assembly polls-giving
the ruling Trinamool Congress a major achievement to highlight in its election campaign.
