Kolkata, May 29 -- West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday paid tribute to legendary mountaineer Tenzing Norgay on his 111th birth anniversary as well as his historical achievement to scale the world's tallest peak Mount Everest on this day in 1953.

He along with New Zealander Edmund Hillary reached the world highest spot Everest ( 8848 mts) and became one of the two first humans to reach there on May 29, 1953.

At 29,035 feet above sea level, Mount Everest is the highest point on earth and to scale this summit is a feat in itself.
