Kolkata, Dec. 2 -- The West Bengal government will provide Rs 2 lakh to the families of those who have died amid what the state describes as "SIR panic," and Rs 1 lakh to individuals who have fallen ill during the ongoing enumeration exercise, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Tuesday.

The move follows a series of deaths and health emergencies reported since the rollout of the Special Information Report (SIR) process on October 28.

Banerjee said that 39 people have died across the state-through suicide, cardiac arrest, or stroke-during the period of form-filling and submission.

"Each of their families will receive Rs 2 lakh as financial assistance," she said.
