Kolkata, Jan. 5 -- : Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee laid the foundation stone of the much-awaited Gangasagar Bridge over the Muriganga River on Tuesday, marking a major step towards improving connectivity to Sagar Island ahead of the annual Gangasagar Mela.
While inspecting preparations for the upcoming Gangasagar Mela, the Chief Minister said the old saying "all pilgrimages many times, Gangasagar once" has now changed to "all seas once, Gangasagar many times," highlighting how easier access will encourage frequent travel to the island.
The proposed bridge will be a four-lane structure, nearly five kilometres long, built over the Muriganga.
