Kolkata, March 8 -- The political confrontation involving President Droupadi Murmu's recent visit to North Bengal's Siliguri intensified on Sunday, with state chief minister Mamata Banerjee accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of disrespecting the country's highest constitutional office.

The chief minister's rebuttal came from the stage of her ongoing protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls after the Prime Minister criticised the Trinamool Congress government for allegedly slighting the President during her recent visit to the state.

Responding to the Prime Minister's remarks, Banerjee displayed a photograph from a ceremony in which BJP veteran L. K. Advani received the Bharat Ratna.
