New Delhi, March 15 -- Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday announced an increase in the monthly honorarium for Hindu priests and Muslim prayer-callers in West Bengal, saying the move was aimed at recognising the role they play in sustaining the state's spiritual and social traditions.

In a message posted on her official WhatsApp channel, Banerjee said the monthly payment to purohits and muezzins would be raised by Rs 500, taking the total honorarium to Rs 2,000 per month. The announcement comes as the state government continues to expand welfare schemes targeted at various community groups.
