Kolkata, July 21 -- West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today announced a statewide "language movement" starting July 26, accusing the BJP-led central government and several states ruled by the saffron outfit of launching a systematic attack on the Bengali identity.

Addressing a massive crowd at the state's ruling Trinamool Congress' (TMC) annual Martyrs' Day rally here, Banerjee urged citizens to organise weekend protests every Saturday and Sunday, declaring the movement will continue until the next state assembly elections.

"I ask everyone to go home and prepare for a larger language movement," Banerjee said. "There should be street protests against the continuous attacks on the Bengali language."
