Kolkata, Jan. 13 -- The standoff between the West Bengal government and the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls escalated sharply on Tuesday after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a sensational allegation involving the Indian Army's Eastern Command headquarters at Fort William.

Addressing a press conference at the state secretariat Nabanna, Banerjee alleged that a senior Army officer of the rank of commandant was operating from within Fort William and working in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party by manipulating voter lists as part of the SIR exercise.

The charge has triggered intense political and administrative reactions.
