Patna, Sept. 21 -- Bihar, which produces 85 per cent of the country's makhana (fox nut), has registered a major expansion in its cultivation over the past decade as the production area increased three times and the revenue from it has grown by 4.57 per cent.

According to official data, the cultivation area of makhana increased from around 13,000 hectares in 2012 to 35,224 hectares in 2024 under the Chief Minister Horticulture Mission.

Similarly, the revenue from fisheries and makhana water bodies, which stood at Rs 3.83 crore before 2005, has surged to Rs 17.52 crore in 2023-24, a 4.57-fold rise.
