Tirupati, July 3 -- A major fire broke out near the premises of the famous Govindarajaswamy Temple in Tirupati on Thursday morning.

The fire reportedly originated from a shop located in front of the temple and quickly spread. The blaze also caused the canopies in front of the temple to catch fire, increasing the risk of a larger mishap.

Two shops were completely gutted in the incident. The sudden outbreak triggered panic among devotees, who fled the area in fear.

Three fire tenders reached the spot and successfully doused the flames.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit. No casualties have been reported.

A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway, police said.
