Pune, Nov. 28 -- A total of 91 leopards are currently confined in cages in three districts of Maharashtra, creating a severe space crisis for wildlife authorities.

The big cats have been kept captive in Nashik, Ahilyanagar and Pune, with the rising human-wildlife conflict across Maharashtra prompting the forest department to intensify trapping operations, resulting in a growing number of leopards being captured, officials said on Thursday.

The Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali, the state's primary leopard rehabilitation centre, has already reached its full capacity of 25 animals.
