Nagpur, Sept. 19 -- Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday rejected Opposition claims that the state was sinking in debt, stressing that borrowings were well within prescribed norms.

Speaking at the Nationalist Congress Party's "Chintan Shibir" here, Pawar, who also handles the finance portfolio, said the state's revenue was rising steadily.

"The state's total debt is Rs 9.32 lakh crore, which is 18.87 per cent of GSDP. A state can borrow up to 25 per cent of GSDP. Hence, borrowings are fully compliant with financial rules," Pawar said.

Referring to the party's Nagpur Declaration, he described it as a roadmap for balanced growth with democracy, social justice and equality at its core.
