Mumbai, Dec. 3 -- The State Election Commission of Maharashtra is considering conducting the district council (Zilla Parishad) elections in two phases, prioritising those regions where the 50 percent reservation limit has not been breached.
The issue of exceeding the 50 pc reservation cap in local self-government bodies is scheduled for the next hearing in the Supreme Court on 21 January 2026.
Out of the 32 district councils in Maharashtra, 17 have exceeded the prescribed 50 pc reservation limit. As a result, the Commission is preparing to hold elections for the remaining 15 district councils-where the reservation norms are intact-in the first phase, according to senior administrative sources today.
