Mumbai, Oct. 13 -- The Maharashtra government has imposed a minimum legal size (MLS) for certain marine fish to be sold in the market, marking a major step to safeguard fish reproduction and increase the state's annual fishing capacity.
The decision, taken with the help of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), means action will be taken against anyone catching or selling fish smaller than the prescribed length.
The Fisheries Department will now enforce the state's MLS, targeting fish that are not fully grown. The initiative's purpose is to allow small fish to grow and reproduce, thereby increasing overall fish stocks. Maharashtra is the second state, after Kerala, to implement these fish length criteria.
