Nagpur, Dec. 10 -- The Maharashtra government has confirmed that nearly Rs 35 crore was disbursed to ineligible beneficiaries under the 'Laadki Bahin scheme', a welfare programme that provides a monthly stipend of Rs 1,500 to women from economically weaker section.

According to data presented in the legislative council, 1,526 government employees were among those who received benefits worth Rs 14.5 crore. Authorities also identified 14,298 men who availed the stipend despite being ineligible, Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare said in a written reply.

The government has decided to initiate recovery proceedings against all men and government staff who received payments unlawfully. Departments have been directed to act under...
