Hyderabad, March 29 -- The Telangana government's flagship 'Mahalakshmi' free bus travel scheme for women has achieved a major milestone, with total savings in transport fares reaching Rs 10,000 crore, officials said on Sunday.
According to TGSRTC Managing Director Y Nagireddy, since the scheme's launch on December 9, 2023, women across the state have availed over 290 crore free journeys in about 28 months.
He noted that women passengers-particularly students, daily wage earners, and middle-class commuters-are now saving Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500 per month on travel expenses.
The scheme has also led to a sharp rise in women ridership, increasing from 40 per cent earlier to over 67 per cent, with more than 35 lakh women commuting daily.
