Mumbai, July 8 -- After a prolonged delay, elections to the local self-government bodies in Maharashtra are finally set to take place by the end of this year. The State Election Commission has begun extensive groundwork and has scheduled an online meeting with all district collectors on July 10. Letters about the meeting have already been sent to all divisional commissioners. District collectors will join in via video conferencing, government sources said.

Local body elections had been stalled for several years due to a range of issues, including the COVID-19 pandemic, legal disputes over reserved seats, and political considerations. As a result, administrators have been running local bodies in place of elected representatives.
