Mumbai, Aug. 18 -- Facing a massive backlog of unpaid traffic fines exceeding Rs 2,500 crore across Maharashtra, the state Transport Department is formulating a one-time settlement (OTS) scheme to recover long-standing dues. Mumbai alone accounts for over Rs 1,000 crore of this staggering amount.

Official figures reveal that since 2020, Mumbai has generated e-challans worth nearly Rs 1,817 crore, but only Rs 817 crore has been collected so far.

With many vehicle owners avoiding payment, authorities are turning to this amnesty proposal, currently under review by the Transport Secretary, as a practical solution to boost recoveries.
