Mumbai, June 3 -- The Maharashtra government will shortly introduce a scheme which will enable tourists, citizens and especially the youths, to hire a bike on rental basis, sources in the state Transport department said here on Tuesday.

In 2016 rent a bike scheme was stayed by then-Transport Minister Diwakar Raote, reportedly to curb irregularities and due to political ties between some operators and opposition leader Narayan Rane.

Nine year after that the state is set to lift the ban and final details, such as hourly rental charges, are still being worked out, the state transport department has outlined key provisions. To offer rental two-wheelers, an operator will now require a license costing Rs 1,000 annually.
