Mumbai, Oct. 18 -- The Maharashtra government has approved financial compensation for farmers whose crops were damaged due to heavy rains in September, bringing much-needed relief to cultivators across north Maharashtra ahead of Diwali.

A government order issued today confirmed that 15,79,269 farmers from five districts will receive assistance under this compensation scheme.

Heavy rainfall on September 25 caused extensive crop damage in parts of Marathwada, north Maharashtra, and Vidarbha. Following the losses, the state government had directed immediate 'panchanamas' (damage assessments) and submission of district-wise reports.
