Mumbai, March 18 -- The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Wednesday unanimously approved the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2026, marking a significant step towards balancing environmental protection, financial discipline and industrial growth in the state. The legislation aims to address rising pollution while strengthening revenue generation without placing any burden on the state's consolidated fund.

During the discussion, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik informed the House that the revised law introduces higher environmental taxes on ageing and polluting vehicles.
