Mumbai, May 28 -- The Maharashtra government has sanctioned a subsidy of Rs 30 crore to support cow shelters across the state, officials said on Wednesday. This initiative aims to bolster the welfare and upkeep of unproductive cattle, whose numbers have risen following a ban on cow slaughter.

The State Cow Seva Commission had earlier submitted proposals for establishing cow shelters in 43 talukas, seeking financial assistance for their operation. Based on these recommendations, the government has approved subsidies ranging from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 25 lakh for 30 selected shelters, with the amount determined by the number of animals housed at each facility.
