Mumbai, Feb. 6 -- The Western Railway (WR) has carried out an extensive ticket checking drive against passengers travelling without valid tickets or violating travel rules, collecting fines amounting to more than Rs 172.55 crore between April 2025 and January 2026.

During this period, over 27 lakh cases of ticketless and irregular travel were detected across Mumbai suburban local trains as well as long-distance mail, express, passenger and holiday special services.

According to Railway officials, January 2026 alone recorded 2.82 lakh cases of ticketless or irregular travel, resulting in the recovery of over Rs 17 crore as penalty. This figure marks an increase of nearly 31 per cent compared to the same month last year, reflecting stricter...
