Nandurbar, Oct. 18 -- Seven people were killed and 18 others injured, eight of them seriously, today when a pickup truck carrying devotees fell into a deep gorge at Chandsaili Ghat in Maharashtra's Nandurbar district.

The devotees were returning from a pilgrimage to Astambha (Ashwatthama) Rishi at Asli in Dhadgaon Taluka. This pilgrimage is held annually around Diwali.

The accident occurred when the pickup van driver lost control of the vehicle.

Seven people died on the spot. Five of the deceased were residents of Ghotane in Nandurbar taluka. Authorities estimate that approximately 25 devotees were travelling in the pickup truck.
