Pune, Jan. 29 -- City-based scientist Dr. Vilas Shelke has developed a sodium-ion battery as an alternative to lithium batteries, which have been notorious for suddenly catching fire in electric vehicles.

This type of battery has been developed for the first time in India and has been approved by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) that operates under Government of India's Ministry of Heavy Industries.

The battery was showcased at the 'Symposium on International Automotive Technology' exhibition organized by ARAI at the Pune International Exhibition and Convention Centre (PIECC) in Moshi, said a release here today.
