Mumbai, April 17 -- Prominent Muslim intellectuals and religious scholars here on Thursday lauded the Supreme Court's stay on implementation of the new Waqf (Amendment) Act.

Among them are State Congress leader M Arif Naseem Khan, Markazul Ma'arif Education Research Centre (MMERC) director Maulana Burhanuddin Qasmi, All India Ulema Council (AIUC) general secretary Maulana Mahmood Daryabadi and petitioner Mohamed Jameel Merchant.

Khan accused the Centre of pushing through the 'unconstitutional' Waqf Bill on the strength of its majority, but the SC has taken cognizance of the serious issues raised by the Congress and other organisations, and "now the law should be scrapped, and a new one should be framed".
