Maha: Mumbai doctor swindled of Rs 3 Cr in sophisticated cyber kidnapping
Mumbai, June 28 -- A 70-year-old physician was allegedly defrauded of Rs three crore after being subjected to an eight-day "digital arrest" by cyber criminals who falsely implicated her in a money laundering scheme, police said today.
The elaborate scam began in May when the victim received a call from an individual posing as Telecom department official Amit Kumar. He alleged a SIM card registered with her personal details was used for criminal activities. Shortly afterward, another imposter, identifying himself as Crime Branch officer Samadhan Pawar, contacted her, claiming her banking details were discovered during a raid at an airline executive's residence linked to money laundering investigations.
