Mumbai, June 29 -- Customs officials at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport here have apprehended a 34-year-old Chennai resident for allegedly smuggling 16 live exotic snakes into India from Bangkok, officials confirmed today.

Suspect Goodman Linford Leo was intercepted on Friday night after routine baggage screening flagged anomalies in his luggage.

Upon physical inspection, officers discovered multiple cotton bags containing the concealed reptiles, identified as two Kenyan sand boas, five rhinoceros rat snakes, three albino snakes, two Honduran milk snakes, one California kingsnake, two garter snakes, and one albino rat snake. Leo possessed no valid documentation authorising wildlife import.
