Kanpur, March 31 -- Kanpur police have uncovered a major illegal kidney transplant racket operating across multiple private hospitals in the city.

The incident came to light after a 23-year-old MBA student from Bihar filed a complaint alleging that his kidney had been purchased for Rs 6 lakh and later sold to a female patient for nearly Rs 80 lakh.

Acting swiftly on Monday night, police conducted simultaneous raids at Med Life Hospital, Ahuja Hospital, and Priya Hospital.

At Med Life Hospital, both the donor and the recipient were found admitted.

Authorities said the hospital failed to produce valid documents related to the transplant procedure.
