New Delhi, Jan. 11 -- The National capital's average Air Quality Index on Sunday improved 55 points to reach 291, upgrading to the "poor" category from its earlier 'very poor' status, the Central Pollution Control Board said.

The primary pollutants in the city's air were the PM 2.5 particles, and the observation data released on Sunday were based on readings from across 39 air quality monitoring stations, out of the total 40 across the city.

The slight improvement witnessed in the AQI levels was likely due to the wind speeds; however, according to the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), 'The air quality is likely to be in the Very Poor category from January 12 to 14.
