Bengaluru, Oct. 5 -- The demand for a separate religion status for Lingayats resurfaced today during the valedictory function of the Basava Samskruthi Abhiyan here, in the presence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
Organised by the Lingayat Matadeeshara Okkoota, the event highlighted divisions within the community, particularly between Lingayats and Veerashaivas, over the proposed classification under the 'others' column in the Social and Educational Survey.
The okkoota passed five resolutions, including one urging separate religion recognition to secure government benefits and reservations, while maintaining affiliation with Hinduism in broader terms.
