Kochi, May 24 -- A Liberia-flagged container vessel has capsized in the Arabian Sea, leading to apprehensions of a possible leakage of toxic substances in the sea off the Kochi coast.

Medical assistance is currently being provided to several crew members aboard a Coast Guard vessel undertaking rescue operation.

Nine of the 24 crew (Russian-one, Filipino-20, Ukraine-two, Georgia-one) onboard have abandoned the ship and are in life rafts, while rescue operations for the remaining15 are underway. Indian Coast Guard aircrafts (Dornier) have dropped additional life rafts near the vessel to facilitate further evacuation.
