Cairo, Dec. 29 -- The Lebanese government has handed over to Syria's armed opposition that came to power in the country 70 Syrian soldiers and officers who fled to Lebanon after former President Bashar Assad stepped down, Syrian newspaper Al-Watan reported on Saturday.

The men were close to Assad's family and had crossed the Lebanese border illegally via informal routes, the report said.

On Thursday, Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib said in a telephone conversation with his new Syrian counterpart, Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani, that Beirut hoped to build good neighborly relations with the new authorities in Damascus.
