Mexico City, Dec. 4 -- Gabriel Fernandez converted a late penalty as Cruz Azul salvaged a 1-1 home draw with Tigres UANL in the first leg of their Liga MX Apertura semifinal.
Former Atletico Madrid forward Angel Correa opened the scoring just after the hour, sweeping home a first-time effort following Romulo Zwarg's deflected cross.
The hosts equalized through Fernandez's 76th-minute spot kick after Marco Farfan was penalized for handball.
In the other semifinal opening leg, a first-half goal from German Berterame fired Monterrey to a 1-0 home victory over Toluca.
Berterame put his side ahead with a 39th-minute header following Jesus Corona's cross.
