Mumbai, Feb. 24 -- Larsen & Toubro (L&T) officially announced here today that it has secured a major contract from the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) to construct India's ambitious LIGO observatory, which is aimed at detecting gravitational waves from powerful cosmic events like black hole mergers and neutron star collisions.

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) will be built at Aundha in Hingoli district of Maharashtra and is expected to be completed within 48 months, according to the statement.

Though the value of the contract has not been disclosed, its value has been estimated to be as large as Rs 1,000 crore.
