Lashkar Gah, Feb. 22 -- At least one person was killed as a landmine left over from past wars went off in south Afghanistan's Helmand province on Saturday, a local official said.

The deadly accident took place on a road in Gereshk district early Saturday morning when the old landmine exploded on a tractor, killing the driver on the spot, provincial police spokesman Ezatullah Haqqani said.

Afghanistan is reportedly one of the most landmine-contaminated countries in the world, with dozens of people, mostly children, being killed and maimed every month.
