Umrangso, Dec. 11 -- Land acquisition has been a major hurdle for the state-run North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) to develop power projects in power-starved Meghalaya, an official said.

"NEEPCO is eager to execute power projects in Meghalaya for the benefit of the people of the state. But the Meghalaya government cannot provide us land and locals are not ready to part with their lands," NEEPCO Executive Director, Jayanta Sarma told reporters.

Unlike other states in India, Sarma said, "the government of Meghalaya is "not the owner of the land, and the Forest department of the state possesses only 5 to 6 percent of the total geographical area."Meghalaya is a sixth schedule state, and has a unique land tenure system, where th...
