New Delhi, Dec. 11 -- With 477 snow leopards, Ladakh leads the nation recording the highest feline population of the species, according to first nationwide Snow Leopard Census of the big cat, Environment Ministry told Parliament.
In a written response to question in Rajya Sabha by Milind Murli Deora, Shiv Sena MP, Environment Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh said that India's first ever census, Snow Leopard Population Assessment in India (SPAI) to count the number of snow leopards was carried out between 2019 and 2023 with its findings published on Jan 30 last year.
The minister noted that, the study found a total of 718 snow leopards in the country with Ladakh recording the highest, recording over 66 per cent of the national population.
