Kolkata, Sept. 11 -- A probe has been launched after Alipore Zoo, in south Kolkata, witnessed the deaths of two of its prime attractions, captive tigresses, Payal and Rupa, in the past 48 hours.

The zoo officials said both the tigresses died of old age.

The deaths in quick succession of the two tigresses also raised questions about proper maintenance of the zoo, which is losing charm among the people gradually as the number of different species have been waning over time.

Payal, a 17-year-old striped tigress, died on Tuesday morning. She was brought to Alipore from Nandankanan in Odisha in 2016, and had been in failing health for some time.
