Kolkata, Aug. 23 -- Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Mayor Firhad Hakim today announced that all shops, hotels, shopping malls, and other establishments under the civic body must display their names in Bengali along with any other language of their choice, failing which strict action will be taken.

Speaking at the KMC's monthly session, Hakim responded to a query raised by Ward 98 councillor Arup Chakraborty, who pointed out that despite 86 percent of the state's population being Bengali-speaking, nearly 99 percent of shops in the city do not display their names in Bengali.

"It is mandatory to have signboards in Bengali. Other languages can be used, but Bengali must be there," Hakim said.
