Thiruvananthapuram, March 16 -- The Kerala Government has granted in-principle approval to implement universal health coverage in the state, ensuring medical protection even for people who are not covered under existing insurance schemes.

Health Minister Veena George has said the new initiative aims to extend healthcare benefits to the "missing middle"-families that are not covered under schemes such as Karunya Arogya Suraksha Padhathi (KASP), the Karunya Benevolent Fund, Medisep and other insurance programmes.

The Minister said the decision was taken following a year-long series of discussions and assessments held at various levels, based on directions from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
