Thiruvananthapuram, Jan. 3 -- The Government of Kerala has reaffirmed its commitment to providing life-saving treatment for children suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and is considering proposals to further strengthen the state's flagship KARE (Comprehensive Care Center for Management of Rare Diseases) project.

Following a workshop titled 'Kaikorthu' held at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, the Health Department has initiated discussions on expanding the scope of the KARE project, including raising the age limit for free treatment and enhancing budgetary support.

Launched in 2022, the KARE project made Kerala the first state in the country to provide costly SMA medicines free of charge through a public-participation model. A...
