Kollam, Sept. 27 -- The Kerala Government honoured Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, affectionately known as Amma, during the Amritavarsham 72 celebrations at Amritapuri Ashram, today, coinciding with the silver jubilee of her historic United Nations address.
The 72nd birthday of the spiritual leader, revered internationally as the "hugging saint," drew thousands of devotees to the Ashram for the day-long celebrations.
In 2000, Amma addressed the Millennium World Peace Summit in New York, where she spoke in Malayalam, marking the first time the language was heard inside the UN General Assembly Hall. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of that milestone, the Kerala Government presented a special honour to Amma.
